But most states in America have something called "at-will employment," which means you can get fired at any time for no cause. Technically it means you can leave a job at any time for no cause too, but it rarely works out that way.
Teachers have it really bad here. Politicians with no experience in education pass laws that make it impossible for them to do their jobs and take away any security they once had. Colorado recently passed a Senate Bill eliminating tenure and making 50% of a teacher's evaluation dependent on students' performance on standardized tests. People complain that teachers get paid too much and have it too easy and are lazy, when most teachers barely make poverty-level wages and work harder than anyone else in any other profession. When funding gets cut, the first thing to go is money for education, because "you can't fix a problem by throwing money at it" anyway.
I am so fucking steamed about this. I know Tipper loves to teach and he feels it's his calling, but I kind of wish he'd felt a calling to be a lawyer or something.
Hope it is all working out in some fashion, Grimmy. I saw on the FB that some things were stirring, but I am hardly there enough to keep track.
At-will employment is something we in the contracting field enjoy the benefits of, at least here in WA. If I have a shitty job, which I do, and I get an offer for a contract elsewhere, I just wake up, call my boss, tell him I quit, drop of the lappy to corporate and start a new job the next day. I have seen that happen here at AT&T at minimum a dozen times in the last year. No questions can be asked and no explanations need be offered. We like it that way.
I would think, given this rate of turnover, that the company (AT&T) would find some way to keep people onboard; given better pay, a person might stick around longer, or perhaps some kind of perk or benefit. But since we have 1/2 of fucking India on a boat on their way over here to take our jobs, why would they care about better conditions? These fuckers work 12-14 hours a day for shit wages and love it. It beats working a call center for ten rupee an hour.
