Bruiser and the tail

We love our furries, but sometimes they get ill. Talk about it here.

Bruiser and the tail

Postby lenawest » Fri Aug 02, 2013 11:21 am

We're going back to the vet today. His diarrhea is getting worse and everywhere. Peeing everywhere but the litter box. Still dragging the tail. Still attacking if you touch him from the hips down. I really don't know that they can do anything for him, but of course, I gotta try.

They never did xrays, because the vet thought he could feel the injury way up high on his tail. Too high to amputate. But we're going on 3 months, now.

So, his tail is broken where I put the red spot thingy. Vet said even if they did amputate it, it may not get the vertebrae that may also be affected.

That is tough, Lena. Poor cat. Can anything be done for him at all?

Basically nothing but pain management. Can't stay on meds because of the damage THEY can cause

Poor guy - will he heal up or is the damage permanent?

Vet thinks permanent. Its been almost 3 months with no signs of healing. And just nothing to do for it. If the break was lower, on the actual floppy part of his tail, they could cut it off and he'd be fine. But its basically spine where it broke. Nerve damage is causing his bladder to swell, he can't raise his tail past half mast unless really pissed off. Gets into a litter box and backs up to poop because his tail hurts against the edge. I've got towels outside of every litter box. He's trying to behave, but can't. I never would have noticed the problem if I hadn't seen him pop one of the youngsters without raising his tail or peeing on the tile instead of the box. Now, its obvious. He can't sit completely down because his tail gets in the way. He just hunches over until he can fall to the side.

This sounds very difficult, for you and for him. Do you think the quality of life he has now is reasonable, in spite of his problems, or are you having to consider the unthinkable? Really feel for both of you.

Not yet. He's uncomfortable and in some pain. The vet related it to a grandpa who needed a hip replaced or had it done already. Just had to figure out the right pain regimen. I can clean the litter accidents as long as he can tell me he's happy despite the pain. I'm all for getting out of misery. Had to do it many, many times over the years. But not until the look in the babies eyes tell me its time.

just yesterday, I finally found something very low profile to use as a litter box so his tail wouldn't hit the edge. First time he hasn't pooped on the floor in months! Litter all over the floor from the scratching, but that's what brooms are for.
