Life Fucks us Again

Postby grimalkin » Wed Apr 24, 2013 8:36 pm

A week ago, the principal of Tipper's school informed him they would not be renewing his contract for next year. He then instructed Tipper to resign, because it looked better than being fired. When Tipper asked the reason for this, the guy wouldn't tell him. Now, they've canned a couple teachers before, and the staff always saw it coming. But this was totally out of the blue. None of the other teachers have a clue why this happened. Tipper's evaluations have been consistently good. The kids love him. He loves the job. He's been trying for the last week just to find out WHY, and no one will answer.

Y'know, it would be really nice, if Tipper blew it some way, if he could just FIND OUT so he stood a chance of correcting his mistake. But no. We kind of suspect that it's personal. The principal is, frankly, an incompetent dweeb--all the teachers think so--and it's possible Tipper threatens him in some way. Or sometimes we think, maybe it's something illegal, like they found out Tipper's a pagan and don't consider it a suitable path (The principal is a Mormon). It could even be something like, "You live too far away to participate in the school the way we'd like." We'd even take, "I don't like you." The silence is infuriating.

So that's what it means to be a teacher in this country. You have no job security and your superiors don;t have to have a reason for getting rid of you.

I wish I could wave a magic wand and make everything OK for both you and Tipper, Grim. :wah:

For now, I'll settle for wishing a pox upon the principal at Tipper's school.

Oh, man. I'm sorry.

One nice thing about being a teacher: VERY powerful union. Has Tipper contacted them about possible wrongful termination?

No Union in our area, Janey. No nothing. I'm not sure the teachers are Unionized anywhere in the state.

I am so sorry to hear this. does Tipper not have any employment rights at all? What a bastard head teacher.

No. No rights at all. If he'd lasted another year, they would have had to give him a reason. But most states in America have something called "at-will employment," which means you can get fired at any time for no cause. Technically it means you can leave a job at any time for no cause too, but it rarely works out that way.

Teachers have it really bad here. Politicians with no experience in education pass laws that make it impossible for them to do their jobs and take away any security they once had. Colorado recently passed a Senate Bill eliminating tenure and making 50% of a teacher's evaluation dependent on students' performance on standardized tests. People complain that teachers get paid too much and have it too easy and are lazy, when most teachers barely make poverty-level wages and work harder than anyone else in any other profession. When funding gets cut, the first thing to go is money for education, because "you can't fix a problem by throwing money at it" anyway.

I am so fucking steamed about this. I know Tipper loves to teach and he feels it's his calling, but I kind of wish he'd felt a calling to be a lawyer or something.

This just burns my ass - so to speak

Is there no legal recourse that you have there? Here people would go to an Industrial Tribunal to appeal this. And you certainly can just can someone without some just reason surely?

Fucking assholes.

Move here.

Shaza, there are no protections for workers here. 'Cause, you know, that would be socialism.

I'd love to move there, but I couldn't take the climate.

I wondered if it was the pagan issue too, which would be religious discrimination. This really makes me angry, and I wish there was something I could do to make things right.

At will employment really sucks. I have been fired a couple of times and laid off lots of times, but I've always been given a reason--bad economy or a reduction in force if a layoff, and before I got fired from a job, there were reviews, evaluations, chances to try and save my job. It's just wrong to not even give a reason.

I'm not one for cursing people, as I am still a follower of "The Jeez" (not so sure about some of those other Christians, though :oh: ), but I second the pox on Principal Twatwaffle. I say we give him--what was that one that Kaos was always saying--hemmorhoids, the itchy kind. I'm not sure if they should occur before or after the surgery to remove his cranium from his colon.

We're pretty sure at this point that it's something either personal or illegal. No one else on the staff saw it coming, and they're all completely astounded. All the teachers volunteered to write to the board and find out what the fuck. They also may submit a joint "Vote of No Confidence" in the principal.
